About

GAL is helplessly adrift in her own life. But after a mysterious call from her estranged father, POP, Gal journeys out into the Atchafalaya Basin to check in on her father, who has been living in seclusion on a houseboat as a Cajun faith healer. Once on his houseboat, Gal makes a disturbing discovery: the corpse of a mysterious young woman tucked into his bed. Upon further investigation, Gal discovers that Pop, delusional and bereaved, believes this mystery woman's corpse to be that of his late wife and Gal's mother, MAW, who died three years prior. Struggling with how to manage their strained bond, Gal reluctantly joins Pop on his journey across the Basin to bury his "wife" in the family plot, hoping she can snap him back to reality in the process. What follows is a literal and spiritual journey across the Atchafalaya Basin where both Gal and her father are forced to reckon with the grief they've been trying so desperately to suppress.

Reviews

“Eerie, evocative, and beautifully acted by Louisiana-bred performers, Brian C. Miller Richard’s film follows a struggling addict (Teri Wyble) home to the bayou houseboat of her estranged father (Dane Rhodes), a sort of have-talisman-will-travel Cajun witch doctor who is either delusional or more lucid than you or I will ever be. Sometimes it’s good to go in not knowing not just the plot but the genre of what you’re going to see…”

David Edelstein / VULTURE

“A compelling narrative and a pair of strong performances only help further the already solid cause of this Southern Gothic mystery.Teri Wyble is in every scene and shines, while Dane Rhodes defies what you’d expect out of his character.“Lost Bayou” tells an intimate and evocative story, all in under 90 minutes.”

Joey Magidson / AWARDS CIRCUIT

“Those with a fondness for Louisiana’s sultry, swampy backwoods will no doubt take to the movie’s pitch-perfect regional atmosphere. Wyble and Rhodes develop a natural and affecting chemistry. Rhodes in particular makes a lasting impression, turning in a laid-back yet subtly weighty performance that’s light on affectation even as it delivers old-world Cajun charm.”

Nick Schager / VARIETY

“Lost Bayou, from Director Brian C. Miller Richard, does a great job of bringing supernatural and surreal plot points crashing down to earth in the form of an extremely relatable story. You’d think a film full of resurrections, faith healing, and houseboats would be a difficult sell, but in the hands of a talented director and on-point script, this film was a surprisingly emotional standout from Tribeca.”
